ABOUT THE LECTURER CHEN Gang (陈刚), born and bred in Hangzhou, is better known as George or Keoki. Having published 72 books, he is professor of English and Translation Studies, senior professional translator and interpreter (as well as government-designated part-time interpreter for years). One of the 23 national-class Tour Guides Extraordinaire in Chinaand the only one in its top tourism province of Zhejiang, George serves as guest professor of XISU and ofChina’s first tourism vocational college & its tourism English education steering committee chair. Once serving the WTO project in the Middle East, as GSA of Zhejiang CTS (Holdings) Corporation in the States and marketing manager for ANA and Chinese citizen outbound tourism while serving on the Expert Committee of Foreign Language Trans-writing in Public Services under the Ministry of Education and on the Expert Committee of English Trans-writing in Public Services of Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, he has been the head of the Expert Committee of English Trans-writing in Public Services of Zhejiang Province, and vice president of Zhejiang Translators Association.

With a transfer from international tourism to higher education, George began to work as director of Translation & Culture Teaching and Research Section, deputy head of the English Department, and then the head of the Institute of Translation Studies in the past 15 years, and supervisor of BTI/BA, MTI/MA & TS postgraduates in Zhejiang University, and academic leader of the team promoting China’s first professional doctorate degree program of DTT (Doctor of Tourism Translation) that qualifies the holder to work in a specific profession in tourism (or to teach at the university level in the specific field of his/her degree). George’s rich working and study experience abroad) plus his professional teaching and academic research at home have made him an eager writer and translator. His published works feature a winning combination of professionalism, pragmatics and scholarship mainly in translation research, global tourism and cross-cultural studies. His Tourism Translation & Guide-Interpreting Studies and Specialized Translation for Tourism are known as the only national key book of its kind and the only coaching monograph inChinarespectively. Besides, he is the author of the English edition of China Travel Kit Series (Hangzhou & beyond), West Lake Poetics, and New Greater Hangzhou; chief writer of A Coursebook on EnglishDChinese Tourism Translation, A Coursebook on English Guide-Interpreting, A Beginner’s Guide to Translation Studies, and Multi-Genre Literary Translation; chief editor, reviser & writer of New Century Translation Studies R & D Work Series, including TS in news, law, business, movie, conference and exhibition; compiler of Royal Classic China Tour (USA & ANA); translator of The Unseen Peking Opera, A Trip to Mountains & Rivers in Zhejiang Province, co-translator of The Complete Illustrated Encyclopedia of Digital Photography and one of the few official translators of Macmillan Encyclopedia. On top of that, his more than 120 essays on overseas tour management, liaison-escort interpreting, cross-cultural interpreting, tourism translation, translation teaching, and translation theory can be found in national and provincial academic publications and media. Furthermore, George’s professional experience as translator and (guide-) interpreter has significantly contributed to his ability to teach translation and interpreting courses of thirty different subjects for undergraduates & postgraduates in his Alma Mater Zhejiang University.
